Which security safe to buy?
When you buy a security safe it's important to consider what you will be keeping inside it. Most security safes for home and office use have a cash rating ranging between £1,000 and £6,000 and a valuables rating ranging between £10,000 and £60,000. If you will be keeping valuables in your safe that have a higher monetary value, you should purchase a security safe with an equivalent cash rating or higher. Some documents do not inherently have a high monetary value but may be more sensitive to theft. Sometimes your insurer may have additional requirements on the maximum cash or valuable rating. If you are looking for the highest level of security, consider our range of Eurograde Safes.
We understand that finding the right security safe to fit your needs may be challenging. That is why we stock a range of security safes, including AiS approved safes and Eurograde Safes. If you plan to secure cash or valuables at home, you might consider also purchasing one of our dedicated home safes.
We offer a wide variety of security safe options so that you can find one perfect for your needs. One consideration is the testing standards for safes. Each of our high security safes has been tested in accordance with the prestigious European security standard EN 1143-1 to prevent attempts for burglary. Some safes are also tested in accordance with EN-14450 standard and are qualified for storing cash and valuables up to a cover of £4,000 or valuables cover of £40,000. The valuables cover is always a sum of ten times the cash cover.
Most office safes are graded in accordance with the European body. This grading system is important for insurance reasons, as the contents of a safe will only be insured for the correct value if the safe carries a matching grade. You should distinguish the following different norms:
EN 14450, Security Level S1 and S2
EN 14450 Grade safes are specially designed for home and office use when securing documents and data with little risk of theft. The insurance ratings are £2,000 for Security Level S1 and £4,000 for Security Level S2.
EN 1143-1, Grade 0 t/m VI
EN 1143-1 Grade safes are specially designed for securing documents and data with high insurance ratings. Within EN-1143-1, safes are graded 0 for the lowest insurance rating up to VI (6) for the highest insurance rating. Grade 0 equals up to £6,000 and Grade VI (6) equals an amount up to £150,000.
If you want to protect the safe's contents from fire damage, it is important to consider a safe with a fire resistance rating. This rating refers to the duration, expressed in minutes, that contents will remain protected from excessive heat and fire. The fire resistance ratings are split up into 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Choosing the right safe depends on the contents you plan to keep inside. Data storage items such as USB and hard disks are more vulnerable to fire damage than, for instance, paper. Therefore, fire safes are categorized as either document safes or data safes.
Most security safes have holes already pre-drilled, ready to be bolted to the floor or wall. The installation requirements will vary depending on the specific safe’s design and where it will be installed. European-certified security safes are always delivered with fixing bolts but others safes may not come with bolts. Please check product details for specifics on each safe.
